Diabetic neuropathy is a common complication of diabetes that affects the nerves, often causing pain, tingling, numbness, and burning sensations especially in the feet and hands. While it cannot be completely cured, diabetic neuropathy pain can be effectively managed through a combination of medical treatment, lifestyle changes, and supportive therapies.

Dr. Piyush Lodha, Endocrinologist at Ruby Hall Clinic, Pune, shares all you need to know:

One of the most important steps in managing diabetic neuropathy is maintaining tight blood sugar control. Consistently high blood glucose levels contribute to nerve damage, so keeping levels within the recommended range can slow the progression of symptoms. Regular monitoring and following a diabetic-friendly diet: rich in fiber, lean protein, and healthy fats are essential. Incorporating anti-inflammatory foods such as leafy greens, berries, and omega-3 fatty acids may also offer additional relief.

Medications play a significant role in pain management. Antidepressants like amitriptyline or duloxetine, and anticonvulsants such as gabapentin or pregabalin, are often prescribed to reduce nerve pain. Topical treatments like capsaicin cream or lidocaine patches can provide localized relief, while non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may help with mild discomfort. In some cases, therapies like TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) or acupuncture may offer added benefit.

Regular physical activity, such as walking or swimming, improves circulation and nerve health. Patients should also practice vigilant foot care examining feet daily, wearing protective footwear, and avoiding walking barefoot to prevent complications. Psychological support is equally important, as chronic pain can take a toll on mental well-being. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and support groups can be helpful tools for coping.
