A day after a report claimed that Shubman Gill might be under the weather and therefore, skipped India’s training session on Wednesday, the BCCI management has clarified that the star opener is indeed healthy and was absent because he opted to practice at the ICC Cricket Academy on Thursday instead.
India are playing their matches of the Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai as per the Hybrid Model.
As per news agency PTI, Gill had taken a day’s off on Wednesday but he’s fine.
However, on Thursday, he opted for a private training session along with some support staff and net bowlers. The opening batter reportedly batted for two hours while facing throwdowns specialists Raghu and Nuwan, and net bowlers from UAE.
As per Cricbuzz, India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar was also part of the training session.
Gill’s absence on Wednesday in Dubai led to speculations over his health.
As per Timesofindia.com, the training session took place in the afternoon hours.
“Shubman Gill trained with members of the support staff for an informal session. Since it wasn’t an official training day, it looks like a personal session. But it wasn’t a marathon one and took place in the afternoon hours,” the website quoted a source as saying.
The Indian cricket team will reportedly have nets on Friday but will skip training on Saturday.
India are scheduled to face New Zealand in their final group A fixture on Sunday. Both the teams, still unbeaten, have already qualified for the semifinals of the Champions Trophy.
While Gill may have allayed concerns over his ill-health, the Indian team is still sweating over the fitness of captain Rohit Sharma who hurt his hamstring during the Pakistan game last Sunday,
Rohit didn’t bat on Wednesday and only indulged in some light jogging. There are reports that he might be rested for the New Zealand game with Rishabh Pant and Washington Sundar among the likely replacements.
