In a recent interview, actor Tanishaa Mukerji revealed how she was on a low-carb diet during Neal ‘n’ Nikki. She mentioned how the diet impacted her.

The actor revealed how going on a low-carb diet affected her hormones.

Kajol’s sister, Tanishaa Mukerji, delivered an impactful performance in Neal ‘n’ Nikki in 2005. She shared the screen with Uday Chopra in this romantic comedy by Arjun Sablok. Recently, the actor opened up about how she lost weight for the role and how it affected her body in the long run. She revealed that she had lost much weight in a short period for the movie.

In a conversation with Hauterrfly, Tanishaa Mukerji said that she was on a low-carb and no-sugar diet. The actor said, “In Neal ‘n’ Nikki, I lost a lot of weight drastically in a very short period. You can’t maintain abs, for women, for a long period because fat is very important in a woman’s body. Fat creates oestrogen production. A man can go down to like 14 per cent body fat. For women, that is very low… because in men’s bodies, there is only one hormone, which is testosterone. We have 36,000 hormones in our body. We are baby producers.”

Tanishaa continued, “And then what happened was that my hormones went up and down because, after Neal ‘n’ Nikki’s shoot, I started just putting on weight. It didn’t matter how much workout I was doing, my weight kept increasing. At that time, I didn’t understand that you cannot be on a low-carb diet indefinitely because your brain needs carbs. Your body needs carbs. So, I was on a no-carb diet indefinitely… I was on a no sugar (diet)… I had gone a little crazy (sic).”

The actor mentioned how she took to yoga to maintain her body. Going on a low-carb diet for longer periods can impact women’s bodies negatively. Here are five negative ways in which a low-carb diet affects women’s bodies.

  1. 1. Hormonal Imbalances- Carbohydrates play a role in balancing hormones, including insulin, leptin, and cortisol. A significant reduction in carbs can disrupt this balance, especially in women. It can lead to issues like irregular menstrual cycles or more intense PMS symptoms.
  2. 2. Reduced Bone Health- A low-carb diet can lead to nutrient deficiencies, particularly in calcium, magnesium, and potassium, all of which are vital for bone health. Over time, a lack of these nutrients can increase the risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures, which are conditions women are more prone to as they age, especially after menopause.
  3. 3. Decreased Energy and Mood Swings- Carbs are a primary source of energy, and when they are severely restricted, women might experience fatigue, low energy, or mood swings. Low energy can also make it more difficult to engage in physical activity, further compounding the issue.
  4. 4. Compromised Gut Health- Low-carb diets often limit fibre intake, which is essential for maintaining a healthy gut microbiome. Fibre helps regulate digestion and bowel movements, and its absence can lead to constipation, bloating, and an imbalance in gut bacteria.
  5. 5. Risk of Disordered Eating Habits- For some women, following a restrictive low-carb diet can trigger unhealthy relationships with food. This can manifest as food guilt, anxiety, or even the development of eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia.
