“I’ve put myself out there at my biggest and not batted an eyelid” — Vidya Balan on body confidence, inflammation, and why self-belief matters more than size
Known for her fearless attitude and unapologetic self-expression, Vidya Balan continues to inspire fans with her take on self-love and body positivity. In a recent conversation, the acclaimed actress opened up about the criticism she has received over the years for her weight and how she’s chosen to rise above it.
“Shamelessly Optimistic”: Vidya Balan on Owning Her Body and Confidence
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Vidya said, “I think I am shamelessly optimistic. I have so much self-belief. I’ve put myself out there at my biggest without flinching. People have told me to work on myself, to lose weight. But honestly, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with me.”
This mindset, she shared, has helped her weather public judgment and stay grounded in her craft.
“That attitude has helped me sail through. I’ve continued playing lead roles, and those insecurities have never held me back.”
The Weight Struggle: “All My Life, I Tried to Be Thin”
While promoting Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, Vidya spoke to Galatta India about her long and complex relationship with weight loss.
“All my life, I’ve tried to be thin. I’ve followed extreme diets and exercise routines. Sometimes I’d lose weight, but it always came back.”
Things shifted earlier this year when she connected with Amura Health, a nutritional group based in Chennai.
“They told me, ‘This isn’t fat, it’s inflammation.’ That was a game-changer,” she explained.
She adopted an “elimination of inflammation” approach to her diet, cutting out foods that didn’t work for her body.
“The weight dropped quickly. I’ve been a vegetarian all my life, but I had no idea that spinach and bottle gourd (palak and dudhi) didn’t suit me. We assume all vegetables are healthy, but that’s not true. You have to understand what’s right for your body. What works for someone else might not work for you.”
Vidya’s journey is a powerful reminder that confidence doesn’t come from the mirror — it comes from within. Her story is one of strength, self-discovery, and choosing to thrive on your own terms.
